The Great Improbability

An Autobiographical Mystery by the People of Earth

by David Sayre

“Here Nature tolerates improbabilities
Sustained against her downward slope”
David Sayre,
Something There Is
  • An epic tale of a global community
  • Intelligent Life as an Intrinsic Reality
  • Entropy and beauty in our Universe

From the highest places of power to those most desolate and wrought with despair, there lie people who struggle to overcome isolation, to relate, and to evolve in concert with others. In this piece of visionary fiction, author and engineer David Sayre brings us into the lives of six strangers whose entanglement takes us from ghettos, prisons and asylums, to concert halls, the pentagon, and the Massachusetts State House. Through the overlapping of these characters’ lives, Sayre explores relationships of people, science, and nature, and demonstrates a common resonance throughout them all: entropy, the study of ignorance and decay.

Ultimately, The Great Improbability advances a new conception of what it means to exist as intelligent life and offers a rational foundation for renewed faith in our common future. Through the characters that inhabit the book we as readers come to understand our own relationships with those around us and with the ever expanding, evolving and complicated world we live in. Thus they are we. Their story is ours.
